Charlottesville, VA -- October 18, 2005 TJ Capital Group, LLC is pleased to announce the formation of
the Virginia Active Angel Network (VAAN). Twenty-one “angel” investors met for the inaugural dinner of VAAN on Tuesday evening, October 18, at Tastings restaurant in Charlottesville, VA. Two presentations, each lasting approximately 20 minutes with a follow-on 10-minute Q&A, produced high levels of investor interest to pursue one of the two opportunities, indicating the need for VAAN and the pent-up interest by angel investors for quality opportunities since the investor market collapsed in 2001. Many angel investors present at the dinner have years of experience providing early and seed-stage financing and mentor capital to entrepreneurs in the Central Virginia area through informal relationships and word-of-mouth. VAAN seeks to provide a forum to bring already active angel investors, as well as accredited investors wishing to learn about angel investing, together with the area’s many bio- and high-tech entrepreneurs to provide financing to inventors and entrepreneurs. VAAN’s “sweet spot”, or deal criteria, includes those opportunities that are patentable, have explosive market potential and contain high barriers to entry. Both presentations Tuesday night were products of the University of Virginia with well-known and successful researchers presenting.
VAAN is a professionally-managed active angel network of accredited investors providing financial and mentor capital to entrepreneurs in the predominantly biotech and bio-healthcare segments of the early and seed-stage financing market. VAAN is a club, not a fund, and members pay a subscription fee to join. Members invest in opportunities on a deal-by-deal basis with other interested members, with TJ Capital Group overseeing the formation of a special purpose LLC investment vehicle for each opportunity, including due diligence, legal and accounting work, and ongoing quarterly reporting. Active angel investors sit on committees, provide mentoring and accept board positions. Interested passive investors, both individuals and pension and venture funds, commit capital to VAAN’s side-fund managed by TJ Capital Group. Angels are by nature private and attendance to a meeting is by invitation only. The next member meeting is in December and TJ Capital Group looks forward to two exciting presentations.
